Wow—what a ride! When author Martin Dukes reached out and asked if I’d be interested in reading On Fell Dark Wings, I jumped at the chance.

I’m a huge fan of anything fantasy, and this one promised dragons, a sorcerer, and sorceresses—basically, all the ingredients for an epic tale. I had high hopes after reading the blurb, but honestly, it exceeded all my expectations.

On Fell Dark Wings Publishers Blurb:

A famous sorcerer, a young sorceress who had forgotten she was a sorceress, and an impoverished poet find themselves at the heart of a civil war in which a great dragon has been summoned to bring death and destruction to the world. Amidst treachery, murder and the violence of battle, a great contest of magic begins in which fire must be fought with fire.

My Thoughts:

This book is part of a larger series, but don’t worry—it reads beautifully as a standalone. The beginning had a slower pace and leaned into classic medieval fantasy vibes, but once it hit its stride, I was completely hooked. The worldbuilding is rich and immersive; I felt like I was walking through the kingdom alongside the characters, caught up in the magic and mayhem.

Speaking of characters, they were a highlight. Khymeragor the sorcerer, Domaraya and Rissica the sorceresses, and Tranto the secretary each brought something unique to the story. Rissica stood out the most to me. Her character arc was so satisfying—she’s fierce, determined, and truly comes into her own by the end.

The plot is packed with tension and heart: a kingdom teetering on the edge of civil war, rebels versus royals, fierce battles, powerful dragons, and that timeless struggle between good and evil. It had everything I love in a fantasy (and romantasy!) read.

If you’re into magical realms, political intrigue, and strong, evolving characters, this book absolutely belongs on your TBR.

Final Thoughts:

I really enjoyed On Fell Dark Wings and will definitely be reading more from Martin Dukes. While I don’t usually reread books (too many books, too little time!), this one left a lasting impression. If you're a fan of epic fantasy or romantasy, you’ll want to grab a copy.
