Shield of Sparrows Publishers Blurb:

“The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.

I’ve spent my life kneeling―to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.

I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father’s throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Now I’m crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him―bound to a future I didn’t choose and a husband I barely know.

Everyone wants me to be something I’m not―a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there’s power in being underestimated?

And what if―for the first time―I reached for it?”

My Thoughts on Romantasy Novels

What hooked me most in Shield of Sparrows was the banter between Odessa and The Guardian. The book started off a bit slow, but about halfway through, the pace picked up and I found myself fully invested.

Devney Perry’s writing is beautiful—polished, immersive, and so easy to read. At times, the story made me laugh, while other scenes were so brutal and gruesome they made me wince.

The characters were a real highlight. Odessa’s courage and resilience shine through, especially in how fiercely she defends those who cannot defend themselves. The Guardian is an enigma: both protector and beast, fierce yet compelling. Tillia, a warrior and steadfast ally, adds another layer of strength and heart to the story.

As someone who loves the enemies-to-lovers trope, I was thrilled with how it played out here. The world-building is rich and vivid, making it easy to picture every detail of this fantasy realm. If you enjoyed From Blood and Ash or Fourth Wing, this book will be right up your alley.

Book Review Final Thoughts:

Shield of Sparrows ends on a cliffhanger that left me desperate for more. I can’t wait to read the next installment! If you’re a fan of romantasy, rich world-building, and a fiery enemies-to-lovers romance, I highly recommend picking this one up.
